Disclosure have potentially been the most successful EDM breakout group of 2012, I previously blogged their remix of Janet Jackson but today it is their debut EP The Face that is gaining acclaim. The brother-and-brother combination of Guy and Howard Lawrence from Surrey, England are at the forefront of the resurgence of so-called ‘deep house’ in the UK.
The Face EP went straight to #1 on the iTunes electronic music chart when it was released in early June and at the ages of just 17 and 20 the proffesionalism of the record cannot be underestimated. Opener ‘Boiling’ features Sinead Harnett’s soulful vocals on top of a pounding bassline, third track ‘Lividup’ is a funky, slower tempo record including chopped vocal samples that fade in and out to create the melody, and closer ‘Control’ features the gorgeous vocals of Ria Ritchie and a set of bouncy club synths.
The standout track however is ‘What’s In Your Head’ which is an absolute club banger. The beat is laden with off-beat glitchy hats and random percussion before all the high-end is cut out and we wait for the build behind the kicks and vocals. When the beat drops the soft, crescendoing synths are enough to get even the most adamant house fan moving.
Update [28.5.13]: For some reason ‘Lividup’ has since been removed from the EP.
