Gorgon City, a.k.a RackNRuin and Foamo, are a producer duo from North London. In their individual work both are known for the ‘bottom-end’ work in the field of bass music and in their collaboration they bring their talents together and throw in a bit more polish and a party-driven mentality.
Opening title track ‘Real’ features guest vocals from Yasmin and is probably the calmest of the four tracks, however it features a catchy three-note bassline which drives the song on behind the line “We used to be real”. Second track ‘Thor’ features a funky chordal melody alongside Gorgon City’s customary house beat before unleashing a melody of chords a good octave lower, and the usual appearance of a rim shot instead of a snare. Third track ‘Athena’ starts with an equally flanged melody to that in ‘Thor’, as well as the rim shot percussion, however it is the incorporation of the vocals that makes this track the most successful on the EP. The vocals are distorted beyond recognition and put on a loop, creating a rhythm that adds to the bassline that you’ve come to expect from the pair. The final track ’10 Below’ follows in the footsteps that have been laid before, crunching baseline, this time with added distortion, thudding percussion and manipulated vocals.
Overall the Real EP has much of the feeling of a ‘warm-up’ record, getting the juices following ready for further EPs or perhaps a full LP at some point in the future, but for now it’s worth a good listen and it will really get you moving. Also it’s only £2.49 on iTunes.
